Indie Russian developer Sergey Noskov really wants us to walk towards the light. No, not that light, but rather his own first-person adventure by that name. Following a short freeware version in 2012 and an overhauled commercial remake on PC last year, now The Light is available on consoles as well, under the new title In Rays of the Light.

Originally conceived as a short "parable about our place in this world, life and death," The Light debuted in 2012 as a freeware release but has since been reimagined and "practically recreated from scratch," both visually and in terms of narrative and gameplay. It is still based on the real-world area around the Moscow Humanitarian University and presented in crisp first-person 3D, but the game now features many more interactive elements and an additional puzzle to solve. Unlike its predecessor, the remake will also include a "more formalized storyline" that better details the "latest events that took place in this God-forsaken place." Released as The Light Remake for PC on Steam in 2020, this year the game has been brought to current and next-gen consoles with its new title and is now available for download on the PlayStation and Microsoft stores.

Another reason why Techland did not make Dying Light a sequel to Dead Island was because the team wanted to create a survival game with a serious tone, while Dead Island's story is lighthearted and the game features mostly hack and slash gameplay.[28] According to producer Tymon Smektała, the team aimed to create a story that was "more mature and more serious".[30] Concerned that their team of Poles would not be able to write a story that appealed to North American audiences, Techland invited DC Comics writer Dan Jolley to be a consultant for the story.[31] Inspirations for the story were drawn from novels such as The Plague and Heart of Darkness.[32] Despite the serious tone, the game features some exotic weapons. Game designer Maciej Binkowski felt that the game featured "Hollywood realism", and that they did not intend to make over-the-top weapons like the Dead Rising series.[33] Like Dead Island, the game's combat was melee-focused, and the team invited a group of Krav Maga technique experts to show the programmers and designers "what it was like to hit something" in order to further refine the game's combat.[34]

On 17 January 2015, Techland announced that physical copies of Dying Light had been delayed due to a "longer lead time than digital". The delay affected the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Techland announced that the game would still be available digitally on its scheduled release date.[44] The physical copies of Dying Light for the affected regions were released on 27 February 2015. "Be the Zombie" mode, originally a pre-order bonus, was made free for everyone who purchased the game regardless of platform and territory. Pre-orders of the physical copies of the game also received the "Cuisine & Cargo" and the Ultimate Survivor Bundle downloadable content (DLC) packs for free.[45] Players who pre-ordered the game received bonus rare weapons. Early adopters were awarded with more in-game weapons.[46] On Steam, players could also pre-order four copies of the game for the cost of three.[47]

In December 2017, Techland announced that they would release 10 content packs within the following 12 months. These content drops included new weapons, new enemies, a new map called "Prison Heist", and a time-attack mode.[67][68] It also partnered with the developers of Left 4 Dead 2, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Rocket League to create crossover content.[69][70][71] A story mode, which drastically lowers the game's difficulty, was added in February 2020.[54] In July 2020, Techland released Dying Light: Hellraid, a DLC pack inspired by the studio's unrealised project, Hellraid. In this DLC, players fight demonic monsters with medieval weapons.[72]

Dying Light was bundled with all of its DLC for the "Platinum Edition", which was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on 27 May 2021.[73] Techland released the same edition for Nintendo Switch on 19 October 2021.[74][75] The game was also released for the PlayStation 5 on 8 March 2022.[76] A performance patch was released for Xbox Series X and Series S on 21 March 2022.[77] On June 9, 2022, Techland released Dying Light: Definitive Edition, which bundles the base game with all the downloadable content packs released.[78]

In May 2015, it was announced that the development of another Techland video game, Hellraid, had been put on hold to allow the studio to allocate resources and time to concentrate on the development of the Dying Light franchise.[102] A spin-off of the game, titled Dying Light: Bad Blood, was released in early access in 2018. It is a battle royale game that pits 12 players against each other on a small map. The game failed to attract many players, and Techland made it available for all Dying Light players for free in January 2020.[103] A sequel, Dying Light 2 Stay Human, was released in February 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and Series S.[104]

Destiny 2[b] is a free-to-play online first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie. It was originally released as a pay to play game in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. It became free-to-play, utilizing the games as a service model, under the New Light title on October 1, 2019, followed by the game's release on Stadia the following month, and then PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms in December 2020. The game was published by Activision until December 31, 2018, when Bungie acquired the publishing rights to the franchise. It is the sequel to 2014's Destiny and its subsequent expansions.

The Shadowkeep expansion brought two major changes affecting gear. First was the introduction of the "Armor 2.0" system; rather that random perks, armor is generated with randomized attributes in six major areas related to each class and to each class skill, along with an assigned element and an energy level. The total attribute score from all pieces of equipment armor influences factors such as skill cooldown rate or the rate of their super charge. Players can infuse resources into an armor piece to increase the armor's energy level. A new array of mods for armor was introduced, most which are limited by element type and require a certain amount of energy. Players can thus add mods into armor that matched the element type, limited by the current energy level for the armor. Each piece of armor is limited to one general mod, two mods specific to that armor type (like helmet or gloves) and a mod related to the seasonal events. Seasonal event mods can be gained through the game world and can also be granted by the re-introduction of season-long artifacts, also with Shadowkeep, which a player gains near the beginning of each season and levels up as they gain experience. As they level up the artifact, they select which mods to unlock which include both special weapon mods and these unique season mods, typically tied to the season's story. The weapon mods included the introduction of special Champions, powerful enemies that required a weapon with the corresponding mod to initially weaken before damage can be done to it. They can also be stunned by particular subclass abilities as of lightfall. [13]

With the release of the Beyond Light expansion in November 2020, Destiny 2's original base campaign (The Red War), as well as all of the content from Curse of Osiris and Warmind were removed from the game and placed into the Destiny Content Vault and are no longer accessible (though Bungie may unvault the associated destinations and activities in the future). In game, these removals are explained as planets that had been taken over and removed from normal space by the forces of Darkness. As a result, Bungie introduced a new player experience to introduce new players to the world of Destiny. It features roughly the same opening as the 2019 New Light, but takes players on a quest further into the Cosmodrome to learn more about the Destiny universe, giving new players' Guardians a more fleshed out origin story. A new NPC for the Cosmodrome was also introduced, who acts as a guide for the new player quest. Veteran players can play through this new player questline by visiting a new kiosk that was added to the Tower, which also contains abandoned quests.[23]

A sequel to Destiny was first mentioned in November 2014, two months after the original released, by Activision chief executive officer Eric Hirshberg, where he said "Work has also begun on future expansion packs as well as on our next full game release".[27] Based on documents of the original release schedule for Destiny, Bungie and Activision intended to release new, disc-based sequels every other year until 2019, with large downloadable expansions in between.[28] Originally planned for a September 2016 release (based on the original documents),[28] Bungie confirmed on February 11, 2016, that a full sequel would release in 2017.[29][30] That same month, video game writer Christopher Schlerf, who was the lead writer for Halo 4 and worked on Mass Effect: Andromeda, joined Bungie.[31] In December 2016, Bungie announced that Vicarious Visions would be joining the development team along with Activision.[32] Unlike the original, it was rumored that Destiny 2 would also release on Microsoft Windows,[33] which was confirmed on March 30, 2017.[34] 041b061a72
